Promoting a carbon market with high environmental integrity.

Online event for Council members was divided into 4 workshops that showed the business sector how to identify projects and carbon credits with environmental integrity.

The voluntary carbon market is one of the main and most important sources of emission reduction and removal credits, essential to meet the targets set in international climate negotiations, most recently at the COP27 held in November 2022.

The business sector is increasingly positioning itself as a pioneer in this climate ambition agenda. The place for this sector to act is exactly through the voluntary carbon market, a market that is still heterogeneous, enabling credits with different qualities.

In view of this, the Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development (CEBDS) has chosen the Ambipar Group, represented by Biofílica Ambipar and Ambipar VG, as a partner for an important mission: to instruct its member companies – which represent more than 50% of the Brazilian GDP – on how to identify carbon projects and credits with environmental integrity.

The online event was divided into 4 workshops with pillar themes for companies to be able to understand the voluntary carbon market:

W1: Voluntary market and business: situating the voluntary market in relation to private sector decarbonization targets

W2: Voluntary carbon market: current international initiatives and state of play in Brazil

W3: Understanding international and national certification standards

W4: Practical analysis of a voluntary project: identifying problems

“If we want the carbon market to advance with environmental integrity, we need to teach those who move the market to be critical, to know what quality projects and credits are. We, as pioneers and market references, have this duty, and this is what we made possible with the workshops, contextualizing the participants and giving them the necessary tools for this evaluation” – comments Annie Groth, Head of Advocacy & Policy at Biofílica Ambipar, one of the specialists who actively participated in the workshops.

To build this intelligence of the more than 100 participants, the workshops went beyond theory and brought into practice cases and examples of companies, such as Braskem and Vale, which already operate actively in the market.

According to Luisa Cotrim, market intelligence specialist at Biofílica Ambipar, this interaction was important for the workshops’ objective to be successfully achieved:

“One of the highlights of the event was, without a doubt, the exchange between the participants, who were able to share experiences, challenges, visions, and cases. This openness allowed the debate to be richer and more interesting for those who are starting to learn about the subject, as well as for those who are already experts.”

The more than 8 hours of content resulted in the construction of the Technical Note: Enhancing Climate Integrity in the Market (Click Here). The document synthesizes the main points of the work so that not only CEBDS members, but other players in the business sector, can be informed about the voluntary market.

Given its relevance, the content covered in the workshops and its importance were also the theme of two episodes of the series ESG de Fato, presented by Ambipar VG’s CEO, Daniela Pedroza.

Being fully aligned with the purpose of decarbonizing the economy, to which Ambipar Group has positioned itself vis-à-vis several sectors, including the voluntary market, the event actively contributed to the joint construction of a knowledge and qualification base for an increasingly larger portion of the market. Step by step, we are getting closer to a greener and more participative future.
