The RESEX Jacundá REDD+ Project, implemented in the Rio Preto-Jacundá Extractive Reserve, is a partnership between the Extractive Reserve Residents’ Association (ASMOREX) and Ambipar Environment. This joint effort earned the Gold Seal in Community and Biodiversity by the Climate, Community & Biodiversity Standards (CCBS) certification from Verra.
Focused on generating positive social and environmental impacts in the region, the project funds improvements for the community with income from carbon credits. Among the benefits already achieved are: (1) construction of two community complexes, including an auditorium, telecenter, clinic, communication antennas, and warehouse; (2) access to management, computer science, and botany courses; (3) periodic medical visits; (4) construction of 18 houses, serving half the population of RESEX; (5) installation of an electrical grid and solar panels for isolated families; (6) strengthening governance with a benefit-sharing mechanism; (7) education and professional initiation for children and youth through the Junior Environmental Protectors project; and (8) local fauna monitoring.
The latest verification generated over 151,000 carbon credits available for sale, ensuring the project continues to benefit the families of Machadinho D’Oeste, in Rondônia.

Co-Benefits
The RESEX Jacundá REDD+ Project contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Consultations with the general practitioner in the municipality were only possible after the construction of a medical clinic with basic equipment, promoting access to healthcare for families. Additionally, the project facilitated three pediatric appointments in 2021 and 2022 to check the health of the children.
The project enables and encourages access to education by offering courses in various areas, such as financial management, administration, social organization, computer science, botanical identification, and environmental education. It also established an educational center for youth and adults, providing access to training that enhances employment opportunities and income diversification.
All project activities are open and encouraged for the participation of all community members, especially women and youth. The activities are based on the Life Plan developed by the project, which aims to promote the empowerment of women in decision-making within the residents’ association. Since the project’s inception, 6 women have held leadership positions on the ASMOREX board.
The installation of 9 photovoltaic panels increased the participation of renewable energy in the Project Area, enabling the distribution of clean and sustainable energy to families in the RESEX, even in the most remote areas. As a result, with both conventional and alternative energy systems, 100% of the local communities have access to electricity.
The project improved local infrastructure through the construction of a community complex and increased access to technology and information by acquiring computer equipment and an internet tower. Additionally, suitable housing has already been provided to 18 families, both from the upland and riverside sectors.
The activities developed by the project are focused on sustainable practices in the RESEX, valuing cultural diversity and contributing to the reduction of deforestation caused by the community members. The main result was the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, directly contributing to Brazil’s emissions reduction target.
The project area is of great importance for the preservation of natural environments both within and outside its boundaries, as well as for promoting biodiversity conservation and ensuring the maintenance of ecosystem services. It is important to highlight that the traditional way of life of the extractivist residents helps preserve the quality of the area, with 26 families managing non-timber forest products since the beginning of the project, both for subsistence and income generation.
