INTERNATIONAL REFERENCE IN SUSTAINABLE FOREST MANAGEMENT THAT HAS BECOME A TRUE REFUGE FOR AMAZONIAN BIODIVERSITY.

Manoa Farm is located in one of the regions with the highest deforestation pressure in the world. Since 2017, most of the properties surrounding the farm have been losing forest to cattle and agricultural activities, especially soybean farming. Manoa Farm, as an international reference of sustainable forest management, is an exception and has remained virtually intact over the years.

Because of this particular condition, Manoa Farm has become a refuge for more than 780 species of fauna in the region. These are animals that fled deforestation in neighboring properties and that found, in the Farm, a safe place to live and multiply.

Since 2018, the project is part of the Compromisso com o Clima (Commitment to Climate) platform of Instituto Ekos Brasil, and in its last verification, it generated more than 940k carbon credits.

STANDARDS

The Manoa REDD+ Project is validated and verified by the main international forestry project certification standards. – VCS and SDVISta (in the validation and verification phase).

CO-BENEFITS

The Manoa REDD+ Project contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The project provides access and encourages education in the region through lectures and training in low-impact management techniques, enabling an increase in the number of young people and adults technically and professionally trained in practices that collaborate with sustainable development. In addition, environmental education activities are carried out, contributing to the knowledge dissemination about the importance of conserving forests, thus generating the consolidation of sustainable development culture. The project also collaborates with the scientific community through a partnership with Federal University of Rondônia Foundation (UNIR) to monitor biodiversity through a research project.

Through actions that encourage low-impact forest management, the project helps supporting around 22 industries in the city of Cujubim, which use sustainable raw materials, integrating them into value and market chains, promoting natural resources conservation allied to socioeconomic development.Manoa also has FSC certification for handling operations, guaranteeing quality and responsibility in production. Also, some of the main Project components are related to disseminating knowledge focused on efficient use of natural resources, seeking greater integration between the parties involved and focusing on sustainable business chains, generating income and making the population aware for the sustainable use of available natural resources.

All activities developed by the project aim to combat climate change and the impacts by reducing deforestation in the project area and, consequently, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. As a result, the project collaborates reducing emissions, with a potential to reduce 8,378,700 tCO2e of greenhouse gas emissions in a period of 30 years.

Project activities promote local biodiversity conservation and ecosystem services maintenance. Moreover, through the practice of low-impact forest management certified by the FSC seal, the project contributes to the terrestrial ecosystems sustainable use, in addition to promoting the knowledge dissemination about local biodiversity with fauna monitoring, referring to the partnership with UNIR, and flora, with sustainable exploration activities that take place on the Farm. Through sustainable forest management activities, the project also contributes to the High Conservation Value Areas (HCVA) protection, promoting vulnerable species and rare ecosystems habitat conservation, such as the “salt lick”, thus, the area acts as a refuge of several species, in view of the surrounding area great.
