New female leadership reflects an increase in the involvement of young people in the community in the Association of Residents of the Rio Preto-Jacundá Extractive Reserve (ASMOREX), in addition to representing progress in the search for gender equality.
In January, the Association of Residents of the Rio Preto-Jacundá Extractive Reserve (ASMOREX) met for an important assembly. In it, the rendering of accounts for the year 2020, the work plan – which defines the destination of investments going forward, and the new management of the association were approved.
As all decisions by the 30 families that live in the region and are part of ASMOREX must be, the election of the board was unanimous. This fact has not been an issue for this community, which is experiencing a phase of full engagement, harmony and unity.
The management, previously led by Mr. José Pinheiro, was passed on to Denise Viana Borges, 25 years old, a representative of the new generation of residents who are members of the association who were already involved in the activities as coordinator of the computer course.
In addition to Denise, the president, check out who makes up the direction of the new management:
-
- Ms. Roseni Matos Dias – Vice President
- Ms. Maria Rosalina de Oliveira Carril Borges – Treasurer
- Mr. Jorgelino Mota Evangelista – Secretary
- Mr. Renato Bona Marques – Chairman of the Fiscal Council
- Mr. Mário Sérgio Pinheiro Borges – Fiscal Council Alternate
- Ms. Lucirley Alves de Oliveira – Fiscal Council Alternate
When the Jacundá REDD+ Project was started as an investment in improving the quality of life in these communities, in mid-2012, Denise was a teenager who saw her parents engaged and hopeful about the changes that the project could bring about. Today, she brings to the leadership the look of those who grew up in this scenario and want to go in search of even more.
“Despite being a great responsibility in my hands and those who are beside me in management, I feel privileged not only for being the youngest president, but also for being a woman in a leadership position in our association, because our society is still very sexist, but thanks to God we have had the opportunity to show work and with faith in God we can, together with our partners, celebrate great victories and bring much more benefits to our community and organization.”

Since the beginning of the project’s performance, one of the commitments assumed has been to involve, train, give opportunity and voice to ASMOREX youth and women. In addition to an important breakthrough in the pursuit of gender equality, one of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the new leadership is also a reflection of this growing engagement and one that we are very proud of.
