Tradition meets sustainability to empower Amazon communities.

The traditional communities of the Lower Tocantins region are a reference in the production of cassava flour, black pepper, and non-timber forest products, with practices rooted in their traditions and techniques passed down from generation to generation.

At the same time, the Jutaituba Farm region is internationally recognized for its biodiversity and has been classified by Brazil’s Ministry of the Environment as an area of extremely high priority for conservation. It is home to at least 600 species of Amazonian fauna and flora and functions as an important corridor connecting forest fragments and protected areas. In addition, the region is designated as an Important Bird Area (IBA) by BirdLife International, as it supports significant bird populations and serves as a refuge for threatened and native species.

Bringing together the social, economic, and environmental importance of the region, the Jutaituba REDD+ Project promotes the inclusion and strengthening of traditional communities while encouraging their activities to be carried out in a sustainable manner.

CO-BENEFITS

The Jutaituba REDD+ Project contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The project promotes environmental education and community training actions with the support of partners and extensionists, spreading knowledge about best production practices, preservation, and maintenance of natural resources. In this way, it aligns the socio-economic demands of the communities with local opportunities focused on more resilient economic activities.

The project encourages access to quality education by providing technical courses and training in environmental and socio-economic areas, with a focus on resilient agricultural production practices, sustainable extraction of non-timber forest products, environmental education on hunting, fishing, and the preservation of endangered species. Additionally, it develops specific and strategic training for the workers at Fazenda Jutaituba, especially for those who are part of the Property Surveillance team.

To disseminate knowledge, provide instructions, and share experiences on the efficient use of natural resources and environmental preservation, actions are carried out to identify potential activities related to resilient subsistence agriculture, sustainable livestock farming, extractivism, and low-impact forest management, considering the demand and profile of local communities. These actions focus on sustainable business chains with integration among stakeholders.

All activities developed by the project aim to promote actions that combat climate change, its impacts, and consequently reduce environmental degradation in the area. To achieve this goal, in addition to encouraging stakeholder engagement and strengthening governance, deforestation monitoring is promoted both via satellite and on the ground. The property surveillance within the Fazenda Jutaituba, equipped with geospatial information, is more effective and assertive in preventing and combating illegal activities.

Jutaituba Farm holds immense relevance for biodiversity, and the project focuses on long-term monitoring of ecological indicators aligned with best practices derived from REDD+ conservation activities. The positive impact extends to populations and ecosystems both within and beyond the property boundaries. As a result, habitat loss, landscape changes, species overexploitation, and climate change impacts are minimized. To achieve this, the project continuously engages, involves, and raises awareness among stakeholders about the importance of conserving native fauna and flora.
