In an unprecedented work, the doctor attended children from 0 to 5 years old. The need was identified by the Association’s leaders, and the action was planned in the project’s annual planning, reinforcing the concern with the community’s well-being and quality of life.
It was a prominent theme at COP27, but financing vulnerable communities as one of the practices that interfere – and a lot – in the fight against deforestation is nothing new for the RESEX Jacundá REDD+ Project.
One of the pillars that maintains the success of this forest conservation project after so many years of operation is the focus on the well-being and quality of life of the local population, who suffer from a lack of basic public services.
Active in the Rio Preto-Jacundá Extractive Reserve (RESEX), its main goal has always been to strengthen the extractive and associativism culture, reducing the population exodus. To achieve a positive result, among the actions implemented is the Community Life Plan, which covers incentives for the personal and social development of its members.
Following this line, it was identified by the leaders of the Residents’ Association, due to the number of children in the community, the need to insert pediatric care for the local population, an unprecedented action until then. The activity was included in the annual planning for 2022 and materialized during that same year, with the visit of Dr. Helena, who attended children from 0 to 5 years old in the Reserve.
“It is an unprecedented work here in RESEX. We put it in our annual planning, and today we are counting on the presence of Dr. Helena attending the children of the community” – commented José Pinheiro, community leader of ASMOREX, on the day of the action.
The intention with this first step is to start monitoring the children’s development from early childhood, evaluating the growth curve and identifying early on possible diseases or more serious problems so that, when necessary, they can be referred to a specialized care center with more resources. In this way, more quality of life is guaranteed for the boys and girls in the unit.

This was one more of the actions that make the residents find in the REDD+ Project a solution for social development and forest conservation in their territory.
