Environmental education is one of the main activities of the Manoa REDD+ Project, offered to students of the city of Cujubim (Rondônia State) and workers of the Farm, with the purpose of disseminating the best practices of use and conservation of forests and to raise awareness to the local population, especially the youth.
With that in mind, the Manoa Forest Education Center (“CEFLOM”) was built, where students and workers of the region receive information and guidelines so that, together, they may bring knowledge about the conservation of the Amazon Rain Forest.
The structure, which received an investment of USD 518,000, counts on a total built area of 850m2 and promotes environmental education with lectures, courses, and training programs, covering subjects of environmental impacts and the importance of proper exploration of the activities. In the period from 2008 to 2019, the activities benefited 1,345 individuals, including students and professionals.
The center receives mainly schools, universities, and institutions of the region. During the visit, students and workers are welcomed with a breakfast, followed by the activities with lectures and a lot of information. After the lunch break and more theoretical content, they are invited to visit an area of forest management activities after the exploratory stage, being able to see in practice the concepts they just learned.
Conservation in practice: FARO students take part in field forest management activities.
In a partnership between Biofílica and the Triângulo Group, the Manoa REDD+ Project acts in Cujubim-Rondônia as a guardian of the rich biodiversity, threatened in the region, also serving as an ecologic corridor to others conservation areas.
Started in 2013, the initiative promotes the conservation of 73,079 hectares of Amazon Rain Forest, protecting at least 117 flora species and 785 of fauna. On a yearly basis, the area represents 279,290 tCO2eq of reduced emissions and approximately 90 persons benefited with the activities of CEFLOM. In 30 years, there will be 22,118 hectares of deforestation being avoided.
The Project is part of the Programa Compromisso com o Clima (Climate Commitment Program) coordinated by Ekos Brasil and led by large companies, such as Natura, Itaú, Lojas Renner, B3, Mattos Filho, MRV and RD S.A.
The activities of the Manoa REDD+ Project contribute with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals:
