Context
The Brazilian Amazon Forest – being the largest tropical forest in the world – is one of the main carbon sinks on the planet. Not only does it help in balancing our climate, but it also protects10% of the world’s biodiversity and serves as a home for thousands of traditional communities. Deforestation, forest degradation and land-use change (including agriculture and cattle raising) contributed to23% of all accumulated anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the world between 2007 and 2016. In Brazil, these activities resulted in 63% of all emissions in 2015. Although the Brazilian deforestation rate decreased between 2004 and 2012, it has increased in the last several years. There is therefore an urgent need to find alternative solutions of social and economic development that value standing forests. This is what REDD+ projects propose.
WHAT IS REDD+?
REDD+ is a mechanism that proposes a set of actions to combat deforestation through social, climate and biodiversity activities that result in the Reduction of Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation added (+) to the conservation of forest carbon stocks, sustainable forest management and increased forest carbon stocks.
BENEFITS OF NEUTRALIZING EMISSIONS
Companies that offset emissions with REDD+ Projects not only directly combat climate change, but also prevent deforestation in the Amazon Forest, preserve biodiversity, and support local sustainable socioeconomic development. In addition, the practice of investing in a carbon project is internationally recognized as an effort that brings benefits and creates value for your company:
Recognize and account for the environmental impact of your operations
Engage employees and clients
Improve the Environment, Safety, and Governance (ESG) indexes
Gain competitiveness against competitors
Increase brand image and reputation
Attract investors
HOW DO WE ACT?
We prospect areas in the Amazon that are under pressure of deforestation and invest in activities focused on the management and conservation of forests from internationally recognized methodologies. Once our projects are structured, external auditors validate and verify our activities in order to originate forest carbon offsets. Biofílica is also responsible for the commercialization of the offsets in Brazil and abroad.
